Five Tips for Stopping Other People From Using Your Skip Without Permission

Posted on

If you are hiring a skip bin for a special project, you may want to take steps to ensure that no one else puts their rubbish into your skip. Unfortunately, if a lot of other people illegally dump their waste in your skip, it could get too full, forcing you to hire an extra one. Here are some tips to deter other people from using your skip:

1. Place the skip out of the way.

One of the easiest ways to stop other people from using your skip is to remove temptation. Don't place your skip out in front next to a busy road or walkway. Instead, put it behind a fence, discreetly on the side of your home or office, or anywhere else it is less visible. If possible, even consider hiring a mini skip and keeping it inside a garage.

2. Cover the skip.

Whether the skip is out of the way or in a prominent area, cover it to prevent unwanted dumping. If the skip comes with a lid, close it, and lock it. If it doesn't have a lid, put a tarp over the tent, and carefully secure the tarp in place using ropes and knots.

3. Light the area around the skip.

People are typically less likely to do undesirable things if they are visible. To discourage them from putting rubbish in your hired skip, put the skip in a well lit area. Alternatively, shine a motion-activated light on the skip so anyone approaching the skip will be bathed in light.

4. Hang a sign.

Communication can be key in getting someone to do as you want them to do. Communicate with people about not using your skip by placing a sign on it. Some people may not feel like they are doing anything malicious by using your skip. They simply may not realise that if multiple people all put a bag in the skip, it will fill up quickly.

To deter these people, post a sign on the skip. You can make the sign short and simple, and just write "don't drop rubbish in this skip" or "personal use only". Alternatively, you may want to be more detailed with your sign and post a message such as, "putting rubbish in this skip costs me money; put your rubbish in your own bin please".

5. Find the culprit.

Finally, if someone puts rubbish in your skip, you may want to figure out who did it. Look at the rubbish, and if you see a nweighbour's name or address on any mail or other items, it may be that person. Call them and ask them to stop.
