Signs It Is Time to Update Your Home's Insulation

Posted on

Insulation is crucial for any residence as this is what functions to keep the temperature levels comfortable inside the home. Nevertheless, some homeowners do not know how to spot the telltale signs that their insulation is past its due date. So what are some of the signs that it is time to update your home's insulation?

Your residence energy efficiency is steadily declining

Other than maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures, your home's insulation functions to keeping the residence energy efficient. This means that by having good insulation, you should be less dependent on your heating and cooling systems. So how can one tell that their insulation has stopped being efficient? For one, you should closely monitor your energy bills. If you notice an increase yet you have not purchased new appliances for the home, chances are your air conditioning is working harder than usual. Secondly, take note of how your home feels during the summer and the winter. If it is not cool during the hotter months and does not stay hot during the colder months, you may want to consider new insulation installation.

Your insulation is old

Although insulation has quite a significant lifespan, it does not mean that it should never be replaced. As the insulation ages, its performance steadily begins to decline. If you have moved into an older home, it is prudent to have a contractor inspect your insulation so that they can establish whether it requires replacement. It should be noted that old insulation could also become a fire hazard, which would pose a serious threat to your residence. In addition to this, old insulation will be outdated in both technology as well as building codes. Newer forms of insulation will be designed with modern technology, which would make them more efficient and convenient for your needs.

Your insulation is a health hazard

Another reason to contemplate insulation installation is if your current insulation has steadily become a health risk. The longer the insulation has been place, the higher the chances that it is ridden with pests, dust mites and a range of other particles from your roof and walls. Left in place, it increases the chances of exacerbation of allergies in the home. It should also be noted that small critters such as rodents have a propensity of creating nests in old, worn insulation.  To reduce the risk of an increase of allergens in your home, it is best to opt for new insulation installation.
