Three Tips for Avoiding Hairballs in the Drains of Your Bed and Breakfast

Posted on

If you have converted your old home into a bed and breakfast, its plumbing may not be up to the task of dealing with lots of hairballs from all your guests. Want to eliminate drain clogs from hair? Take a look at these tips:

1. Be proactive with quality drain covers.

Unfortunately, if you wait until the hair is clogging the drain, dealing with the problem can be annoying and potentially costly. Some people try to dig the hair out of their drains, but unfortunately, if you are not familiar with using drain snakes or if you are using a sharp object like a wire clothes hanger, you risk poking a hole in the pipes.

Instead of taking that risk, be proactive about protecting your drains and invest in quality drain covers. Ideally, you should use a sturdy metal cover with holes that are too fine to let hair through. You also want the cover to be easily removable so that you can grab it and empty it quickly when cleaning the baths or showers in your B&B.

2. Offer a dryer sheet and some instructions to your guests.

If you prefer not to clean strangers' hairs out of your drains, consider inviting your guests to take care of their own hair. Dryer sheets work perfectly for keeping hair out of drains. You simply place the dryer sheet over the drain whilst showering, and it allows the water to pass through, but hair collects on the top of it. When you are done showering, you simply remove the dryer sheet along with the hair and throw it away.

To invite your guests to use this method, place a stack of dryer sheets on the bathroom vanity. Consider repackaging the dryer sheets in a cute box so they don't distract from the style of the bathroom. Also, hang a sign explaining how to use the sheets and thanking your guests for doing so.

3. Schedule regular drain cleaning.

Unfortunately, it can be impossible to know whether or not you have a clogged drain until the pipes start backing up and you have toilet water in your shower or dishwashing water in your toilet. To avoid that situation, consider scheduling regular drain cleaning for your B&B. That way, you always know that your drains are clean, regardless of what your guests do with their hair.
