Four Tips for Choosing a Roof Colour Based on Feng Shui Principles

Posted on

Choosing the right colour for your roof can be a hard choice, but if you want to employ feng shui practices into your roof's colour palette, there are several tips that can help guide you choose the right Colorbond roofing materials. Keep in mind there is no one roof colour that is right for any home that wants balance and feng shui. Rather, in most cases, there are several different colours that can work:

1. Take cues from the surrounding natural elements.

Feng shui principles dictate that a home should complement the elements that surround it. If you live in a heavily wooded area, you are surrounded by the element of wood, and you want to complement that with materials invoking water such as a blue roof. Similarly, if you have lots of rocky mountains visible in the distance, you may want to complement the rocks, which represent the Earth element, with a red or orange roof, as the element fire enhances earth.

2. Consider multiple colours tuned to the direction they are facing.

The direction your roof is facing also invokes certain Feng Shui elements, which you should try to complement as you select your roof colour. Traditionally, north-facing items correlate with water, northeast and southwest with earth, east and southeast with wood, and west and northwest with metal. Finally, south-facing structures correlate with fire.

Figure out which direction your roof is facing, identify its corresponding element, and choose a colour that represents a complementary element. To illustrate, metal enhances water, fire complements earth, and water benefits wood. In addition, earth fuels metal, and wood benefits fire. If your roof is facing multiple directions, as most roofs do, don't be afraid to have a multi-coloured roof.

3. Attract energy with a bold choice.

Harmony and complementary elements are a big part of feng shui, but you can also create a bit of energy with a bold choice. Instead of complementing the elements surrounding you or the direction of your home, use the colour of your siding to complement those elements, and use your roof as an accent colour.

Pick a colour that boldly contrasts with the complementary colours you have chosen, and use that colour to attract energy. In addition to putting your bold choice on the roof, create continuity by choosing a front door and trim that matches your roof.

4. Complement the colour of your birth element.

Alternatively, choose the colour of your roof by taking your birth element into account. Depending on your birthday, you have a feng shui birth element that corresponds to your personality and correlates to the colours that are best for your space. For example, if your birthday is Nov 14, 1977, your element is earth. As a result, you want earth colours on your roof such as brown, stone or other neutral colours. Alternatively, as fire enhances earth, you can play with reds and oranges as well.
